Two hours away from Munich the world is a different place. And yet it is exactly the way you would most likely imagine it as a visitor to the Bavarian capital. All around, towering mountain massifs, winding roads, the legendary peaks of Watzmann & Co. and much exciting history. One of them is told by the luxury hotel which opened in 2005 as an architectural hot spot high up on the Eckerbichl at Obersalzberg.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Long after its opening, the reputation of the new building continued to oscillate between a natural top location and the former image of a restricted driving area, between a design temple and “too modern for the area”. I visited the hotel myself a few times during this time as a conference guest or journalist and often felt the overall restrained feeling that the hotel, despite all its outstanding architecture, cuisine and spa world, could never finally find its place in the region. This has since changed in an exciting way. The atmosphere in the hotel, where Kempinski has been the host since 2015, has become more lively and personal. GM Werner M\u00fcller, who is about 40 years old and dressed in sporty Bavarian gear, is happy to tell you about the mountain tour he did yesterday and how it really manages to clear his head. The young event manager raves about the places of his childhood between K\u00f6nigsee and Kehl that invite him to go cycling or hiking.. And the smart in-house activity concierge Manuel Huber has the right tour tip ready whatever the weather or your mood.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nIn conversation or in “his” Activity Guide Manuel Huber recommends a bouquet of tours, paths and challenges – whether the “Pure Alpine Sundowner Bike Tour” at 1,000 m, canyoning, tobogganing in the ice channel or the hike from Maria Gern to the Kneifelspitze. Experience adventure, with or without him. Do things on two or three days for which you have not had the courage or the opportunity before. And if you don’t do anything, you won’t have a bad time out up here. Truly, you won’t. The newly renovated 154 m\u00b2 maisonette suites of the Kempinski Hotel Berchtesgaden, for example, invites you to take a long look at the Alpine world on two floors – including a 40 m\u00b2 penthouse Panorama Bergwelt terrace and a balcony. If you come alone, you will also be blissfully happy in the 75 m\u00b2 Panorama Suite, with its own fireplace and outrageously good mountain views. First Munich, then Berchtesgaden<\/h4>\n

Werner M\u00fcller and his team have merged the resort with the region and the local people. And they also brought their Munich colleagues on board. For example, anyone who is a guest at the Four Seasons Kempinski Munich can take a few days off after their state capital appointments to enjoy the mountains. For this purpose, both hotels are equipped with driving services etc. and have put together packages. A dinner in the restaurant Le Ciel, the gourmet temple on the mountain, is also a pleasure. The star chef Ulrich Heimann was already stood behind the Le Ciel stove when the hotel opened in 2005 and focuses on classic French dishes with typical Heilmann gusto.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And if you want a little more city experience again – or even the next business meeting is coming up, then let’s go to Salzburg. The proud Mozart city is only about 30 km away.

also recommends the exhibition centre at Obersalzberg. Here one gets an idea how one of the most important tourist regions in Bavaria suffered for so long under the appropriation by a dictator. The first attempts at a tourist revival failed in the 1950s. In 1996, after the withdrawal of the Americans, Bavaria was once again able to freely dispose of the site, and the idea of a new luxury hotel together with a documentation centre was born.<\/p>\n

Getting there: <\/strong>By car about 2 h from Munich to Berchtesgaden or by train from Munich to Berchtesgaden in about 2.75 h including a taxi ride from the station to Obersalzberg.<\/p>\n

Hotel: <\/strong>The Kempinski Hotel Berchtesgaden is situated at an altitude of 1,000m and offers 138 rooms and suites, an extraordinary spa area and two restaurants, the restaurant Le Ciel with star chef Ulrich Heimann and the restaurant Johann Grill. Below the hotel is the Berchtesgaden<\/em> Golf Club<\/em> with a 9-hole course and a small ski area. In 2007 a helipad for VIP guests was installed and the conference area was extended.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
